The Challenge of Cleaning Clothes in Space

On Earth, we rarely face situations where water and soap are completely unavailable. Even in difficult conditions, some amount of water is usually accessible to wash clothes. However, the situation is very different in space. Astronauts cannot rely on water and detergents, making it a huge challenge to keep their clothes clean.

Until now, astronauts had to wear the same clothes repeatedly, getting accustomed to dirty garments. Washing clothes in space with traditional methods has been nearly impossible. But now, a breakthrough solution is on the horizon.

China’s Innovative Detergent-Free Washing Machine

Scientists at the China Astronaut Research and Training Center (CARTC) have announced a revolutionary solution. They have developed a small, detergent-free washing machine that can clean clothes in space without using traditional water or soap.

This futuristic washing machine is cube-shaped, slightly larger than a carry-on suitcase, and weighs around 12 kilograms. It can handle up to 800 grams (28 ounces) of clothing per cycle.

How Does It Work?

Instead of liquid water and detergent, the machine uses a combination of mist and ozone. For every wash cycle, it consumes only 400 milliliters of water, but not in liquid form — it is transformed into mist.

The system employs ultraviolet (UV) light to generate ozone, which is a powerful disinfectant. This process keeps clothes free from bacteria and germs even after being worn up to five times. As a result, astronauts will no longer have to tolerate unhygienic or smelly clothes during their missions.

Future of Space Hygiene

This innovation marks a significant step forward in space research and astronaut comfort. With this technology, long-duration missions will become more sustainable, reducing the need to carry excessive amounts of clothing.

By introducing this compact, eco-friendly washing machine, China is contributing to the future of space exploration and ensuring that astronauts can live in cleaner, healthier conditions.
