The Hockey Village of India
Hesal Village is not new to hockey. In fact, it is known as the hockey village of India, as most of the residents here play or support the sport. The village has produced many hockey players who have represented the state and the country at various levels.
One of them is Nikki Pradhan, the first female Jharkhand player to reach the Olympics in 2016. She was part of the Indian women's hockey team that finished fourth in the Tokyo Olympics 2020, creating history. Nikki is an inspiration for many young girls in Hesal, especially Pundi Saru, who considers her a role model.
The Journey of Pundi Saru
Pundi Saru started playing hockey when she was 10 years old. She joined the Yuwa School, a non-profit organization that empowers girls through education and sports. She learned the basics of hockey from her coach Franz Gastler, who is also the founder of Yuwa.
Pundi Saru soon showed her skills and passion for the game. She participated in many tournaments and won several medals and awards. She was selected for the Jharkhand state team and played in the Junior National Hockey Championship in 2019.
She also excelled in academics and scored 82% marks in her class 10 board exams. She wants to pursue higher studies in science and become a doctor.
The Opportunity of a Lifetime
Pundi Saru got the opportunity of a lifetime when she was selected for the Cultural Exchange Program at Middlebury College in America. She is among the five girls from Jharkhand who are undergoing a six-month training program at the college's hockey academy.
The program aims to provide exposure and experience to young hockey players from India and help them improve their skills and confidence. The program also includes cultural and educational activities to broaden their horizons.
Pundi Saru is enjoying her stay in America and learning new things every day. She hopes to make her village, state, and country proud by playing hockey at the highest level.
She says...
"I want to follow the footsteps of Nikki Pradhan and play for India in the Olympics. I also want to inspire other girls from my village to pursue their dreams and not give up on them."
